It's hard to believe that Shirley Temple has already turned 80, as I, and most people, remember her as the amazing little star from yesteryear.
She was extremely popular as a child star because of her inspirational and optimistic onscreen presence that was so needed during the tough years of the great depression. From 1935 to 1938 she was the top draw at the box office.
Just before her 80th birthday she fell and broke her arm, of which she jokingly said, "People should turn on the lights when they are walking around in the dark."
Temple has also served as an ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. She turned 80 on April 23.
