Thomas Athans didn't receive the type of celebrity news concerning himself that he would have wanted, as the police netted him in an Internet sting set up to battle the growing use of the Web to solicit prostitution. He is the husband of a U.S. Senator - Democrat Debbie Stabenow.
Supposedly Athans was so cooperative he was never charged with a crime, as police said he "did not ask for any special treatment.” Like mentioned here, it's strange then that the Detroit Free Press had to get the information concerning Athans under the Freedom of Information Act.
Athans has attempted to launch liberal radio talk shows in the past to battle the increasingly popular conservative radio programming, but has failed a number of times.
Stabenow commented on the circumstance saying, “This is very disturbing and serious. Obviously it’s a deeply difficult and personal matter.”
Detectives saw Athans' solicitation on the Internet and set up surveillance and waited until they saw Athans enter the motel, and 15 minutes later exit. They pulled him over and he admitted to engaging the prostitute Alycia Martin, and paying her $150 for oral sex.
Athans has connections to powerful Democrats and liberals, and was singled out and praised by Hillary Clinton in Detroit recently.
