It wasn't only a surprise that Michael Johns finished as one of the bottom three at the end of the singing Thursday, but when it was eliminated, it came as a shock to a lot of people; including himself.
With the other two contestants lumped with him in the bottom three, Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado, who had been there before, the choice of voting Johns out of the competition didn't make sense. Even so, that's what people casting over 31 million votes decided.
It's possible viewers were swayed by judges' comments that his choice of "Dream On," from Aerosmith wasn't the best for an inspirational song - the theme of the night.
For the judges, the most surprised was Paula Abdul, who expressed dismay when the vote came in. Host Ryan Seacrest said, "There are a lot of surprised fans here and watching right now."
Contestants remaining in the competition are: David Archuleta, Kristy Lee Cook, Brooke White, David Cook and Jason Castro.
