Kelsey Grammer announced Tuesday that Fox (NYSE:NWS-A) had decided to drop his sitcom "Back to You," saying that it came as a surprise to him, as "We were told all this time we were in good shape and we were coming back."
As late as Friday, Grammer had appeared on Jimmy Kimmel's talk show to promote the series. After returning home from the taping, Grammer received a surprise call informing him the show was canceled.
According to Grammer, he talked to Kevin Reilly and Peter Liguori about the cancelation, but he alleges the explanation for the cancelation didn't really explain the reason for the decision.
"I'm not really sure what the real reasoning is. I think they ended up with a show that was going to be a great show. It was a great show," he said.
In reality, rumors have been circulating that the two stars of the show, Grammer, along with co-star Patricia Heaton are two costly to continue on with. It sounds like Grammer simply refuses to acknowledge that; the reason he says he doesn't know what the reasoning behind it is.
The price to retain the two would demand a significant audience, and that audience has fallen to under 7 million viewers a show, so it obviously doesn't pay the bills. Grammer and Heaton evidently aren't willing to drop their price to make the show work financially.
There is an online petition circulating around the Web inn order to try to savet he show. Grammer himself has emailed friends to partake in the effort to revive the show. He said he's been in talks with CBS (NYSE:CBS-A) head Leslie Moonves about picking up the show there.
