Eddy Arnold, who by virtue of the number of charting singles was the most popular country music performer in the 20th century, died early today at the age of 89.
While many people label Eddy Arnold as a country music performer, and that's not inaccurate, he actually had a large number of crossover hits on the pop charts as well. In the middle of his music career he changed his style in a way that appealed across music genres.
One of Arnold's amazing achievements was to chart with his songs in five different decades; one of the few in history to accomplish that. He also had 28 No. 1 singles, along with more charted singles than any other artist.
Arnold had many hits before the 1960s, but most people would remember the stage of his career where hits like "Make the World Go Away," "I Want to Go With You," "Somebody Like Me," "Lonely Again," "The Last Word in Lonesome," "Turn the World Around," "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," and "Please Don't Go" came out.
He sold over 85 million records throughout the years, and his 100th album was released in 2005 by RCA Records.
