For those who get caught up into the excitement of the Kentucky Derby, this is a reminder that the post time for the race is 6:04 pm EST. This year the race can be seen on NBC (NYSE:GE), with coverage starting at 4:00 pm EST.
It rained all night in the area, but it has been sunny so far all day. The thought is that the sun shining today (it's partly cloudy) will enhance the speed of the track, and could also give an advantage to horses like Cool Coal Man, Visionaire, Smooth Air and Denis of Cork, which have raced on wet tracks in the past.
Other variables are some of the horses have raced only on synthetic tracks, which some think will be a disadvantage for them, as Churchill Downs is a dirt track.
The favorite for the race is Big Brown, with 3/1 odds to win. Favored for second place is Colonel John, with 4/1 odds. Some betting sites like Pyro, which has 6/1 odds to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.
The Kentucky Derby is a race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, run annually in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May.
A crowd of between 140,000 to 150,000 is expected to watch the race in person.
