The experiment by Activision to launch a Guitar Hero video game as a niche band, will be interesting to watch to see if there is a large enough market to support the initiative.
In this case, they're working with Aerosmith, in a game called of course: Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.
Although dubbed and marketed as Aerosmith, it will include some of the artists the group has worked with throughout their careers, such as Run D.M.C.'s "'Walk This Way' and 'I Hate Myself for Loving You' by Joan Jett." Users will also be able to work with 30 of the best known hits of the band with the game as well.
Developed through Activision's RedOctane unit, the co-founder of the division, Charles Huang concurred it was a trial run saying, "This is an experiment for us. There are certain artists that have so much great music like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen ... but we wanted to do something much bigger."
One of the reasons they chose Aerosmith, was they are one of the few rock bands that have enjoyed a long career, according to Huang, making them a potentially successfully partner in the venture.
The band was at the launch of the game, appearing at the Hard Rock cafe in Times Square to help promote the product.
You can play the new game on PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360. There will also be a version for the PlayStation 2 that can be purchased for $89.99.
Other projects Activision is working on for Guitar Hero are Guitar Hero: World Tour, which will release during the Christmas season, along with a Metallica Guitar Hero game, which will be released on an unknown date in 2009.
