Friday night's Camp Rock on the Disney Channel (NYSE: DIS) drew an average of 8.9 million viewers in the 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. slot, to make it the most-watched cable entertainment show so far in 2008. Those numbers came from the fast national ratings provided by Nielsen Media Research.
The show was not just big for cable, but it was the top show for the night across all television networks. It's closest competitor was CBS (NYSE: CBS-A) which drew only 5.8 million.
Starring in the show is the increasingly popular rock group the Jonas Brothers, along with Lovato.
The numbers were spread evenly among the demographics, as in the 6 to 11 age group 3.5 million tuned in, while in the 9 to 11 group, 3.4 million watched the show.
Even with the good numbers, it fell well short of the record enjoyed last summer, when on August 17, 2007, High School Musical shattered the cable viewing record, garnering 17.2 million viewers. That includes the live, plus 7-day basis.
Disney continues to churn out big hits for the network, as it is the 12th in the last 13 of releases on the Disney Channel to score over 5 million viewers.
