Sonny Landham, probably best known for his role in "Predator," has decided to run as a Libertarian candidate for the US Senate seat in Kentucky. His opponents are the formidable Mitch McConnell and Democrat Bruce Lunsford.
Landham calls McConnell "Boss Hogg" and Lunsford an "elitist."
Assuming he gets the required 5,000 petition signatures needed to run by August 12, it would make for an entertaining race, as Landham is known for his straight talk, and for despising political correctness.
It's interesting to note that two of the actors in the 1987 version of "Predator" have successfully entered politics, with Jesse Ventura becoming governor of Minnesota, and of course Arnold Schwarzenegger, now the governor of California.
If Landham became a serious candidate, he would have all his past haunt him, as he appeared in adult films in the early part of his film career, as well as served 2 1/2 years in a federal prison for harrassing an ex-wife, although the conviction was later overturned by a appeals court.
Another personal problem is Landham has been married five times, and that wouldn't sit well with many people anywhere in the U.S.
Even so, concerns are if the race between McConnell and Lunsford is close, it could siphon off votes from McConnell, effectively causing him to lose his long-held Senate seat. It's possible, but improbable it'll happen.
If nothing else, just getting some of the impromptu comments of the fearless and colorful Landham will make it a fun race to watch.
I can see his campaign slogan now: Predator politics. Sounds like a winner to me!
