While it didn't have a lot of competition, it still surprised me that Marvel's latest offering of "The Incredible Hulk" did as well as it did at the box office this weekend. With the first big screen adaptation being about as bad a movie as I and others have seen, it had a lot of baggage to overcome in order to gain some traction.
Taking into account an inflation-adjusted take of $72.3 million for "The Hulk" in 2003, the film still struggled to find its audience. The actual 2003 numbers for the original were $62.1 million.
It didn't surprise me that it took the No. 1 spot, just that it did it with $54.5 million. I thought it would be more around $40 million. This probably means we'll see a huge drop next weekend, although that looks weak, as the controversial "The Love Guru" and "Get Smart" are the weekend's openers.
The family-friendly film "Kung Fu Panda" held pretty strongly in its second weekend to finish No. 2 this time around, taking in a pretty solid $34.3 million. That was a decent hold of 43 percent. So far its total is $118 million.
Some people were surprised by the fairly good performance of "The Happening" by M. Night Shyamalan, which enjoyed a $30.5 million performance over the weekend. I thought it might do ok because of the trailer alone I saw, which I felt would be compelling to those that like these types of thrillers. In this case I was right in that aspect.
But now that people have seen it, I think it'll have trouble gaining a lot of positive word of mouth, which means it'll probably plunge in its second frame.
