Depending on how you view Batman as a super hero, and whether you like things to remain on a traditional scale, the newest installment of Batman: The Dark Knight will be sure to generate strong opinions on both sides of the issue.
From screenings, there have been some mixed emotions on the film, although most enjoyed it. Most of the uncertainties come from some of the emphasis the film zooms in on, and it takes some deeper into the human psyche than they may want to go. Younger viewers may not enjoy or get it. Some older ones will probably be disappointed, although not unaffected.
General fans will probably like this film a lot, while those who grew up with and loved Batman may find themselves feeling odd about the story and how it's presented, and feel like it's not quite the Batman they knew.
Still, Christian Bale has been my favorite Batman actor, and I think most will enjoy his performance again. I'll be interested in how people respond to Maggie Gyllenhaal playing the part of Rachel Dawes in place of Katie Holmes. Some that have screened the film say it's hard to make the transition to Gyllenhaal.
One Last Look at The Dark Knight Trailer
The portrayal of The Joker by the late Heath Ledger is probably as strong as most have said, and he brings out a tremendous dark and psychotic side to the character; more than you'd see in the usual past stories or movie villains connected to super heroes.
In seeing the movie, I think when you're through watching it, some of the dialogue and images will stay with you for some time. For fans, producers and directors, I guess you can't ask for much more.
When you come down to it though, nobody cares what I or anybody else thinks, they're going to go to the theater and draw their own conclusions. I'm looking forward to responses from people on the movie after they watch it.
One other point, the film is probably too long, running at 152 minutes. But then again, fans shouldn't be bothered by that, as I never felt the 3-hour films of the Lord of the Rings trilogy were too long, I felt they were too short. But I was a true fan. The Dark Knight will probably be the same for most.
