While "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" was just released today (July 11), director Guillermo del Toro says from the day a script is approved, plans for the DVD are already being made.
“We start the DVD the day the screenplay gets approved,” del Toro said. “Javier Soto and I, we’ve been working on the DVD since day zero. He was there the first day we opened the offices. He has been documenting every step of the movie.”
Understanding it's the true fans that go buy a DVD, del Toro is going to be generous as usual with the material he includes with the Hellboy II DVD material.
“I like to let a very generous landscape come out for fans because I know the casual fan will never dwell into the DVD extras, really,” said del Toro.
He added that some of the other reasons he adds the material is so people that may want to learn some of the business, can do so by viewing the DVDs he produces. Some of the DVDs he learned from were Fangoria and Monsters of Filmland.
Concerning Hellboy II, del Toro said the cut this time around won't be longer than the one for the first Hellboy.
A problem that has already emerged for the Hellboy DVD is two different studios released the two movies, and so there probably won't be a package deal in the works; although del Toro added that a third Hellboy would be packaged with the second one.
Sony Pictures released the first Hellboy, while Universal Studios released the current one. At this time there's no deal in the works to attempt to bring the films together in a package deal.
As far as the DVD release, del Toro said he's going to top the original Hellboy that included three disks in the release, and that they have a huge amount of material to choose from.
