What's up Sherlock? Well, it's Robert Downey Jr., as he's landed the role of the British investigator in the Warner Bros. production.
It's actually the second project Downey has gotten involved in since his role in "Iron Man." He'll also star in "Cowboys and Aliens" by Dreamworks, although shooting on "Sherlock Holmes" will begin first.
Landing the role came about really by accident, as Downey was visiting the offices of Silver Pictures where his wife Susan is executive vice president. Joel Silver showed his vision of what Holmes would be like in the film, and Downey got interested and signed on, or rather, is in negotiations to sign on; although it seems like a for sure deal.
This version of Holmes is based comic book written by producer Lionel Wigram, who has envisioned Holmes more outgoing and adventurous. He is also taking the usual stuffiness trait out of him. What it sounds like is an Americanized version of Holmes.
Directing for Warner Bros. is Guy Ritchie, and along with Wigram, producing will be Silver, Dan Lin and Susan Downey.
Release date for the film is October 2009.
