Don Knotts who kept audiences laughing for years as the blundering Deputy Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffith Show” landlord Ralph Furley on “Three’s Company,” has died at 81 years old.

Andy Griffith said this upon learning of his death:

"Don was a small man ... but everything else about him was large: his mind, his expressions," Griffith told The Associated Press on Saturday. "Don was special. There's nobody like him.
"I loved him very much," Griffith added. "We had a long and wonderful life together."
Griffith also mentioned that Knotts had a brilliant comedic mind and wrote some of the shows best scenes.

Although he was involved in numerous films and seven TV series, it was the “Andy Griffith Show” that made him so famous and through which he won five Emmys.

The show was on from 1960-68 and was never out of the top 10 ratings for each season with the final season going out as number 1. “I Love Lucy” and “Seinfeld” were the only other series in television history to exit at the number 1 position.

We all may have laughed at Don Knotts, but most of us laughed with him.
